The Department of Pediatrics is looking for a Genetic Counselor to join our team. This position provides genetic counseling services and supports clinical genetic projects and research efforts within the Department of Pediatrics. Clinical genetic counseling practice areas include but are not limited to medical genetics and pediatric sub-specialty clinics. The Genetic Counselor provides education, risk assessment, counseling, support, and follow-up to individuals and families who have or may have genetic health conditions. This position will help support genetic counseling services and research across multiple pediatric specialties and is housed under the Division of Pediatric Neurology.
The Genetic Counselor, Temporary License is responsible for providing information and support to families and will focus on one of the following areas under the supervision of a Licensed Genetic Counselor: Leukodystrophy and Epilepsy, Inpatient Neurology, and General Neurology. The area of assignment will be determined during the hiring process. Identifies, investigates, interprets, and communicates potential risk factors and provides support and counseling to families and patients by referring them to relevant support services under the supervision of a Licensed Genetic Counselor. A temporary Genetic Counseling License is required for this position and is only good for 18 months, after which time the candidate must have a full Genetic Counseling License. This position is supervised by a Licensed Genetic Counselor while learning the nuances involved with genetic services. The level of autonomy is limited in this learning role.

Responsibilities
Essential FunctionsThe essential functions of the Genetic Counselor, Temporary License position will be performed with the supervision of a Licensed Genetic Counselor. The essential functions include, but are not limited to:
- Performs genetic risk assessments by collecting and evaluating medical and family histories.
- Analyzes and interprets information obtained from patient, medical records and resource materials.
- Evaluates complex medical and genetic literature and incorporates it into clinical practice.
- Explains testing options, procedures, test results and their implications; performs psychosocial assessment during genetic consultation and provides grief and crisis counseling as needed.
- Works with health care team in development and implementation of the care plan.
- Advises patients and families regarding financial and community resources.
- Evaluates outcomes and modifies testing or medical recommendations.
- Facilitates involvement of treatment team members, timely reports and scheduling of team conferences.
- Assist with prior authorization, working with family and payor to ensure appropriate testing is ordered.
- Participate in newborn screening follow-up, including counseling of newly identified families and reporting information back to the department of health for conditions referred to pediatric neurology.
- Participates in University of Utah Genetic Counseling Graduate Program, including clinical rotation supervision, teaching, research or other program activities.
- This position involves light work that may exert up to 20 pounds and may consistently require light work involving lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects involving patient care or medical equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
Required
Current Temporary Genetic Counselor License in the State of Utah.
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
